I felt the rumbling long before I made the leap. A quiet but persistent message kept surfacing: This isn’t you anymore. I had spent decades building a successful career in product development, but something inside me was shifting. I craved change—real, scary, exciting change. I wanted to move away from developing products and toward developing people. But pivoting wasn’t easy. I didn’t have the “right” experience on paper, and while I was turning down high-paying offers to stay on my current path, I was also getting passed over for roles on the people side. The tension between what I could do and what I wanted to do was real—and exhausting.
So I got to work. Over the next three years, I had over 60 informational conversations. I built new skills, practiced telling my story in a way that translated across functions, and gathered a small but mighty community of allies and mentors. One of them was my own boss—who, ironically, wanted me to take his job. Week after week in our 1:1s, he asked how my exploration was going, and he supported me even when I said, “I don’t want your job.” That kind of support, along with a steady dose of tough love, helped me stay committed to the change. When the right opportunity finally came, I wasn’t just ready—I was rooted. Making the leap felt like relief, alignment, and renewal all at once. And today, many of those early allies are now part of my extended network of colleagues, collaborators, and clients.
