Your Voice Is a Leadership Tool

Being “nice” doesn’t mean you’re leading.

True leadership shows
up when you combine:

- Directness

- Empathy

- Boundaries

Early in my career, I was learning how to speak up with directness. And I did. A lot.

I got plenty of coaching—usually not about what I was saying, but how I was saying it. I was often seen as bold, even heroic, by those who were thinking the same things but didn’t feel safe enough to say them out loud. But let’s be real: that kind of courage didn’t always land well with leadership.

It wasn’t until I started to really understand empathy—not as a soft skill, but as a powerful form of connection—that I began to shift. I learned to balance my truth-telling with care for how it impacted others. That’s when I started to move from just being heard to actually being influential.

Your voice shapes culture, drives change, and inspires teams.
